Is the M.A. in Applied Linguistics for you?
The M.A. in Applied Linguistics is a two-year part-time course that has been offered by the Centre for Applied English Studies (formerly known as the English Centre till June 2008) since September 1996.

Are you interested in issues relating to the teaching, learning and use of English as a medium of tertiary academic and professional education?
Would you like to develop your knowledge and skills in the areas of English for Academic and Professional Purposes?

Features of the course
The MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong has a number of distinctive features:
- it prepares teachers who wish to teach English for Academic Purposes and English for Professional Purposes in universities, colleges, and the professional workplace;
- it adopts a functional approach to the description, analysis and teaching of language;
- it emphasizes classroom observation and action oriented research;
- it contains a strong empirical component, and provides students with many opportunities for data collection, analysis and interpretation;
- it embraces a sociocultural view of language development and use;
- it provides students with practical skills and knowledge in the areas of curriculum development and evaluation; assessment; language teaching methodology; materials design and evaluation; and CALL;
- it frames the teaching, learning and investigation of language within the particular context of Hong Kong.
Am I eligible to apply?
To be eligible for admission you must hold a Bachelor degree from the University of Hong Kong or a comparable institution; or another qualification of equivalent standard accepted for this purpose.
In recent years, the number of applications we have received has been approximately 4 times the number of places available on the course. Professional experience and postgraduate or professional qualifications are therefore a factor in the selection of candidates.
The University does not provide financial support for students taking part-time Master’s degrees. Successful candidates are expected to be self-supporting. As the course is not available in distance mode, candidates are also expected to be resident in Hong Kong for the two years of the course and available to attend regular classes twice a week.
